{bb} Monitoring Modems ??

I see this in the bb-hosts file:

#dialup modem-bank1 192.168.117.1 16

what will this tell me, if the modems are up and responding
or
if the modem has someone on the line

I guess I really could care if someone is on the lines, I know their
working then.
I'd like to know if the lines are up and functioning.

What will this do?
