I'm running linux 2.0.35 and perl 5.003 is installed.

You'll find all the Perl modules you'd ever want there.

However, are you sure it's not already on your system?  I thought it was a
standard module - it could be that you need to check the library path or
that you don't have permissions for that directory.

Run this (again, from cpan.org):
perl -e 'print join("\n",@INC)'

It will tell you where Perl is looking for modules.
