SMS Client is a UNIX command line based utility which allows you to send SMS
messages to mobile phones and pagers. This software has been written and
tested on Linux however a number of users have reported success running
under both AIX and Solaris. SMS Client currently supports a wide variety of
services providers and protocols:

it works on any phone, and already has the interfaces written to many
services, of course you can also write your own interfaces if you use a
different paging service. It is not specifically GSM, it is SMS (short
message service) which is a service rather than a protocol.
As I see it, SMS-client would be an ideal replacement to Kermit for the
following reasons;
Like BB it has a developers mailing list (read developed by the end user)
It deals with the many protocols, so BB only needs to provide the input to
SMS-client
NO more paging issues on the BB list :-) (handled by SMS-client)
The author is interested in expanding the "drivers list" (service specific
interfaces)
It worked for me first time :-)
I admit that I am not an expert in this field, I maintain my own ISP, I'm
semi confident with Linux and I dabble in perl. It took many days of cursing
to get BB/Kermit paging through my Telco, I still see limitations and
sometimes messages do not get sent. I installed SMS-client and sent my first
successful page within one hour, so I think that would enhance the
satisfaction of brothers new to BB.
The other thing is that I can now consider a web interface to page ANY pager
or Mobile phone on ANY service (ok, so we still have to find the
knowledgable person in OPTUS before we can write a driver, but it is not
impossible)
That is the way I see it, it is only my opinion and I don't bite if you want
to disagree, after all, what good is shared development without end user
opinion :-)
Kind regards
Craig
