is it safe to assume you checked the raw data with an rrdtool fetch?

that's not good.  did any of the example provided with rrdtool work?

do you know what version of libpng you are using?

I don't quite follow how the graph is coming out with that info.  Is that
output to STDOUT or is it legend on the .png itself?
