Two solutions:

1) Use the 'logger' command to write something after the files are purged. Do
this through cron.

2) Use 'The_State' to monitor the log files (perhaps with swatch) and then
you can manually clear the errors or automatically expire them.

Personally I've done (2) since I use the State with other things.
