You have three options:
1) Get a non-buggy ping.
Download link is on BB's download page, in case company policy forces
you to have the latest update, you should be able to put the ping in
eg. BBHOME/bin and use it explicitely by changing etc/bbsys.local to
match.
2) Use the noping keyword on all hosts.
This will cause all conn tests to be reported as clear.
3) Use the noconn keyword on all hosts.
This will totally disable conn reporting, so you won't even get a
conn column. Remember to clean up www/logs after making this change.

No, power off on shutdown is not SMP safe. It kind of happens to work on
a lot of boards. If making that APM call reformats your disk and plays
tetris on an SMP box, the bios vendor is within spec (if a little
