The path setup is done the way it is to reduce the 
potential problems with security.  

/bb shouldn't be in /etc/passwd, the name of your bbuser goes there.

/cgi-bin is where you have defined your cgi-bin to be.  If you 
have it defined as /var/www/cgi-bin, that is it.  $BBHOME/cgi-bin 
doesn't make any sense.  All the cgi programs are copied to the cgi-bin 
directory of your web server at installation time.

/home/www (or whatever your home www directory is) can be 
completely different from your $BBHOME/www directory.
As a matter of fact, it should be.  $BBHOME/www should be 
where your bb related stuff is, and should not be the 
default home section of your web server unless that is the 
only thing you want to run.  

>From my homepage of my BB server, I have a nice "jumpstart" 
that can point you to may bb.html, my mrtg site, my cacti site, 
a current network status derived from bb, or any number of 
password protected pages that show specific information about 
departmental information.

It's all about reading the docs and asking questions.  All the questions 
you've asked so far are fairly easily answered.  All except the make 
one - and gnu make probably solved your problem.

The paths setup espicailly for true bb home and $BBHOME.
There seems to be two levels instead of one.

/bb verses bb home in /etc/passwd. 
/cgi-bin verses bb home www/cgi-bin.
/home/www or bb home www.

I is not a clean architecture design.

I too am having trouble installing bb on Solaris and am finding the README
docs quite confusing (or maybe it's just me)  :-)

But if anyone has got some documentation for an install on Solaris, it
would be much appreciated.
