Thanks for your input Paul. You don't have to reply to this email. FYI.
So UNIX id bb should have no /etc/passwd home path defined. Which
the /bb -> /opt/bb/<version> works okay since / is default home if no
home defined in /etc/passwd. So bb still finds /opt/bb/<version> as home.
And the default bbconfig /home/www is for the web server software. Apache, other.
And /www -> /opt/bb/<version>/www for bb web stuff.
And /cgi-bin -> /home/www/httpd/cgi-bin. Or something like that.
I never got the chance to use gnu make but I will to see what may be different.
I was able to find the problem with not being able to start
bbd with the runbb.sh and running the
bb <IP-ADDRESS-OF-MACHINE> "status test.test green hello world" to
create the test.test file in logs.
It was etc/bb-hosts
It had a line in for BBPAGER BBNET BBDISPLAY by default.
192.168.116.1 x.bb4.com # BBPAGER BBNET BBDISPLAY ftp pop3 http://x.bb4.com/
So my line was ignored since it did not have # BBPAGER BBNET BBDISPLAY added.
Thought this was a Comment.
Also the two starts looked different.
GOOD START - bbd really running.
% runbb.sh start
Starting Big Brother
Starting Big Brother Daemon (bbd)...
Starting Network tests (bb-network)...
Starting Display process (bb-display)...
Big Brother 1.9e started
BAD START with bb-hosts not configured correctly - bbd not running
even though is states it started.
% runbb.sh start
Starting Big Brother
Big Brother 1.9e started

The path setup is done the way it is to reduce the
potential problems with security.
/bb shouldn't be in /etc/passwd, the name of your bbuser goes there.
/cgi-bin is where you have defined your cgi-bin to be. If you
have it defined as /var/www/cgi-bin, that is it. $BBHOME/cgi-bin
doesn't make any sense. All the cgi programs are copied to the cgi-bin
directory of your web server at installation time.
/home/www (or whatever your home www directory is) can be
completely different from your $BBHOME/www directory.
As a matter of fact, it should be. $BBHOME/www should be
where your bb related stuff is, and should not be the
default home section of your web server unless that is the
only thing you want to run.
>From my homepage of my BB server, I have a nice "jumpstart"
that can point you to may bb.html, my mrtg site, my cacti site,
a current network status derived from bb, or any number of
password protected pages that show specific information about
departmental information.
It's all about reading the docs and asking questions. All the questions
you've asked so far are fairly easily answered. All except the make
one - and gnu make probably solved your problem.
