If the "rename" error is still happening (and doing so frequently),
I'd suspect that it may be pointing to the cause of all the weirdness.
AFAIK, the process of creating the log file with a dot prefix and
then renaming it is to produce an more "atomic" style of file
creation. It prevents logs from being read until they have finished
being written.

I'd guess that the "multiple display" cause is due to one instance
of the server process renaming the file and a second instance then
failing to find the "dot" file. Perhaps you are seeing the same
error for a different reason.

I'd recommend taking a good hard look at your "logs" directory
(filenames, permissions, free space, inodes, that kind of thing),
with special attention to any left-over "dot" files.
