I was under the impression that larrd would just use the path where
it was installed. As long as the software is placed in
/usr/local/bb/bbserver/ext, then everything should work as expected.
The client start-up script would not normally need to know about
larrd, unless you needed it to run some bottom-feeder scripts.
The symptom that you describe leads me to suspect that you have
not run bbconfig, since that's what creates bbsys.local.

I might be wide of the mark with this, because I'm not currently running
a modern (split) config. Could it be that you need to run bbconfig
twice, once for the server and once for the client?
