With the clarity that comes with complete ignorance, I'd have to say
that looks like a swap problem. If you can tell us how swap is handled
on these machines, it might help in tracking the problem.
Other than that, it might help to know what OS these things are
running. For example, if this was Solaris, my first guess would be
that you may have been bitten by the "tail" bug.
