{bb} bbd and /dev/console

What would make bbd grab a hold on /dev/console. Does bbd output to
/dev/console directly or via STDOUT.

I am trying to track this down because I get unreadable characters
on my console and I thing they are coming from bbd:

bb$ lsof | grep console
dmispd 380 root 0u VCHR 0,0 0t0 55039 /devices/pseudo/cn@0:console
dmispd 380 root 1u VCHR 0,0 0t0 55039 /devices/pseudo/cn@0:console
dmispd 380 root 2u VCHR 0,0 0t0 55039 /devices/pseudo/cn@0:console
bbd 442 bb 0r VCHR 0,0 0t0 55039 /devices/pseudo/cn@0:console
ttymon 4248 root 0u VCHR 0,0 0t146 55039 /devices/pseudo/cn@0:console
ttymon 4248 root 1u VCHR 0,0 0t146 55039 /devices/pseudo/cn@0:console
ttymon 4248 root 2u VCHR 0,0 0t146 55039 /devices/pseudo/cn@0:console

any ideas?
