Just a wild guess, but ... could there be any firewall issues with
DNS lookups being blocked when you use an external DNS server, but
succeeding when you have the local BIND daemon running ?

I've added some additional trouble-shooting print-outs to the 
next bbtest-net version, so it will tell you which DNS lookups
are slow.
