Another solution I have implemented just a few days ago uses a
modified "bb" client program which sends the status messages over
HTTP.  In all cases I've seen, clients are allowed to make HTTP
requests (and the BBDISPLAY server already runs a webserver, so...)

The modified "bb" client simply wraps the BB message into an
HTTP "POST" to a web-server CGI script; this script then unpacks
the message and forwards it to the local bbd daemon.

It will be in the next bbgen release. Beta version early next week.
