Keep in mind that this response benefits from the clarity that only
complete ignorance can provide. I'm not using "bbgen" myself, so this
is pure guesswork.

It looks to me like the substitution of the required colour into the
link "/gifs/bkg-${COLOUR}.gif" is being done twice. I'd have a quick
hunt in "bb-hosts" for machine and/or sub-page names that might get
mixed up. Names that are simply extensions of other names (e.g.
"machine" and "machine1") might be a cause of problems.
