{bb} SMTP temp-fail versus down

Greetings, 

	Is there a way to make the SMTP check smart enough to know when
the SMTP process is actually down as opposed to just busy and
temp-failing?  It would be nice to get a yellow if it's just busy and a
red if it's actually down.
