You could be running out of "i-nodes" on your filesystem. (An "i-node"
is more or less a directory entry/filename, and if you use the default
Red Hat Linux filesystem ext2 or ext3, the number of available i-nodes
is determined when the filesystem is generated).

Try running "df -i" and see if that is the problem.
