Jeff mentioned DNS lookups have a long timeout. True. If your
BBNET server tests many hosts, putting a caching/forwarding
nameserver locally on the BBNET box can be quite useful.

Heh - I actually tried that while working on the bbgen network tester
in bbgen 2.0; it was horribly slow when a service (or host) died.
And Laurent Grilli who got me into working on a network test-tool
was testing lots of ports that were supposed to be down (e.g. there
was a policy that "telnet" was not allowed, so all hosts had a
"!telnet" entry).
