OK, although from the load it sounds like the bigger problem was on 
your BBNET box.

OK, that does make sense. The standard BB "ping" test is done based
on the IP-address in the bb-hosts file - so it runs fine whether your
DNS works or not. All of the other BB network tests use the hostname,
however, so if your DNS is hosed then those tests will surely fail.
