{bb} bb client dies without error

I had a box hacked last night.  I've gotten just about everything 
sorted out and re-installed, but bb keeps dying.  First I had an error 
that it was trying to run a script that was not there, so I took that 
out of bbdef.  Now I don't get an error, but bb runs on the client for 
1 minute then dies.  running bb 1.6e1 on linux kernel 2.4.26.  Ideas?
