Re: {bb} Multiple nodes on one host

Hi Rolf

I know it's along time ago since you sent this request, but now i have had this problem also. I fixed it with multiple instances of the whole bb client. Each instance has it's own user and bb client environment. this way it's also possible to have different BBDISPLAY and BBPAGER servers configured for all the clients.

Maybe there are other, better solutions, but this works and is also easy to maintain.

Regards Urs

Hi Urs,

thanks! This is working fine for external scripts, but how about the bb-internal tests like cpu, etc. If , for example a machine with the name cola has the 3 aliases coke, afri and pepsi, we want that the internal tests are displayed as well for pepsi as for coke and for afri (cola is not necessary). I haven't found a solution for that.

kind regards
Rolf

Hello Rolf

Just set the $MACHINE to the name of your alias, just before you send the
message with $BB in your external script should do the job.

regards

Urs

Hi Phil,

first: Thanks!

Hi Mike & Co.,

I don't have a solution but the same problem. We are using virtual
interfaces to switch services between machines in case of outages.
Display, history, statistics, etc. should be linked to the service and
not to the machine. We use bbaliasname and we hacked bbinc.sh to change
$MACHINE in bb, so BB recognizes hostname and 1 alias, but only one. Any
ideas how to get bb accepting different alias names would be widely
appreciated!

Rolf

I'm making a bunch of assumptions here, but your requirement feels
different to me. It sounds as if Mike is trying to display the
standard client test data under multiple dynamic hostnames. Your
requirement would appear to be the testing of specific processes
which are associated with dynamic names.

True.

In your case, I'd recommend using a network test (from BBNET) as
it is much better at spotting problems than process watching on
the client. For example, if you have a web-server on a virtual
host then something like this should work:

0.0.0.0 virt1.mydom.com # noconn http://virt1.mydom.com/index.html

Cheers, Phil.

Ok, you are right. This is what we do already for network tests. Our problem are tests that have to be executed on the client (Database checks, check of timestamps, etc.) be external scripts. I'll try an

example:

Test A is a database check on "db-machine",
test B is a check of timestamps on "prod-machine".
Now the aliases db-machine and prod-machine (and others) might be
located on the same server. But I can send messages to the server only
as either db-machine or prod-machine.

greetings,
Rolf
