No guarantees, but you could try this.  It worked for me.

In $PATH/rrdtool-1.0.49 (or whatever you called it)

cd perl-piped
perl Makefile.PL
make install

cd ../perl-shared
perl Makefile.PL.
make install

I never could get make site-install-perl to work properly, but this 
solved my RRD.o problem.
