Alas, I don't think bbchkhosts.sh is designed to catch a lack of
BBDISPLAY/BBNET/BBPAGER definition.
Those two lines with nothing between indicate that runbb.sh isn't
finding the active host listed as a server or a client in the bb-hosts
file.
Assuming that you're in a 1.9e server directory and not a 1.9e client
directory...
Within runbb.sh, there's the following line:
# echo "BBDISPLAY=$BBDISPLAY BBPAGER=$BBPAGER BBNET=$BBNET"
Try uncommenting it and see what it says, then match it against your
"uname -n" or your etc/bbaliasname.
If they come out blank then try a "grep" on your etc/bb-hosts with
BBDISPLAY or BBPAGER or BBNET (the roles you want it to play) and make
sure it says what you expect it to say. There could be some invisible
characters (e.g. a carriage return); you could output the grep to a file
and make sure the content is what you'd expect. "grep '^[0-9].*
BBDISPLAY'"

All the etc/bbchk*.sh commands run OK with no bad output.
BBOUT shows:
