The RRDTool comes with awesome tutorials: http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~oetiker/webtools/rrdtool/tutorial/

But for the most part RRD can be used in both shell scripting or Perl (easier in my opinion).  Just follow the RRD Tutorials.  I have some script examples of invoking RRD and creating them in and out of the Big Brother realm.
