Definitely not a stupid question, and the answer is "I don't know."  
Since then, though, I've gotten several other situations which should 
have generated warnings, at least, and no e-mails.

All of my other upgrades went fine.  This one is stumping me.  If I 
could just be told, more or less, where the e-mail is actually 
generated, I can try to debug the problem myself.  A few 'set -o 
verbose' in the correct scripts should do the trick, if I know where the 
output will wind up.
