And I've checked, and the answer is "Yes."  But as it turns out, the 
real cause of the lack of e-mail notifications was even simpler:  the 
disk on which BBHOME lived was itself full, and this somehow prevented 
the generation of the notifications, apparently.  I deliberately filled 
up /boot with a file full of zeros just now, and got the e-mail alert.
