Since you mentioned me by name, I'll attempt to expand on the reply
from Nicolas.

The BB client does not have direct access to the status logs and the
other data in the "bbvar" directory. If I remember things correctly,
this was the case even when the client and sever parts were combined.
All communication takes place through the network, even when both
parts are running on the same host. So, the client will not interfere
with your "bbvar" directory because it doesn't even "know" that such
a thing exists.

To answer your specific questions, yes you need to start two different
"runbb.sh" scripts and each has it's own idea about what "BBHOME" is.
The name "BBHOME" might appear as if it should apply to both parts,
but it doesn't. It applies to each one individually and might just
as well have been named "INSTALLROOT" or "WHEREILIVE".

Making a symlink for your own convenience is also not a problem but,
to avoid confusion, you should avoid using that link in your
configuration. Instead, what I like to do is make a /usr/local/bb
directory and place both client and server parts in that.
