Could you try running 

   BBHOME=/usr/local/bb   # wherever your BB install is
   export BBHOME
   $BBHOME/bin/bbtest-net --debug HOSTNAME

where HOSTNAME is the name of the server in the bb-hosts file.

Also try the same command with the --no-ares option added.
