larrd was developed for long term trending, not real-time
performance analysis. by using rrdtool we accept the fact the older the
data gets, the less important it becomes.
To answer your question, no. And based on my experience, for real
time series data, rrdtool is perfect, and increased long term granularity
is not needed (though *a lot* of people think they need it). If you
really do need it (keeping track of crashes/outages), than rrdtool is not
the right datastore.
