Re: {bb} BB4 CPU utilization on BBNET/BBDISPLAY/BBPAGER system

Hi all, I’m running the latest BigBrother version on a RedHat 3.0 Enterprise Linux system with 2 CPUs and 1GB of RAM. I’ve got a pretty basic install, monitoring for conn on about 500 servers with the one Linux system being the BBPAGER, BBNET, and BBDISPLAY. I also have a handful of hosts with the client installed and reporting in.

What I’m seeing is the very high CPU utilization when BB is running, the load average is in the 11-12 range and idle time is always 0%. Below is a top output showing this. I believe this is the reason my bb.html web display is only updating about once an hour and it’s taking quite some time to get through the list of systems.

I’ve tried everything from adjusting threads to making the web pages dynamic instead of static with no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to reduce the load? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi

I had the same problem one year ago, with ~ 500 hosts : 40 minutes to update bb.html, and high load on the server (quad Sparc 400 MHz, 4 Gb RAM).
I went from BB to BB + bbgen (2.15 IIRC) and bb.html was updated in... 3 seconds

You can even take a look at Hobbit, which is 100% written in C.
