Hi

I had the same problem one year ago, with ~ 500 hosts : 40 minutes to 
update bb.html, and high load on the server (quad Sparc 400 MHz, 4 Gb RAM).
I went from BB to BB + bbgen (2.15 IIRC) and bb.html was updated in... 3 
seconds

You can even take a look at Hobbit, which is 100% written in C.
