BB's shell scripts don't perform at all well when you move into monitoring
several hundred boxes.
I had the same problem and ended up writing tools to solve it:
* bbgen - an add-on to BB that replaces the web-generator and network-test
shell scripts with tools written in C.
* Hobbit - replaces BB completely, the successor to bbgen.
Both available at http://hobbitmon.sourceforge.net/ - GPL licensed, so
they can be used free of charge.
Regards,
Henrik
