You've got quite a few options for notification.  To answer your question, 
yes you can tailor BB to only notify for specific tests.  Investigate the 
paging rules.  The BB help pages should be quite a help here.

You also have options other than using a modem.  I use email to my cell 
phone to get a text page.  a side benefit to the email is you get to test 
the configuration by sending email to your normal email account.
