RE: {bb} Parsing information from a webpage

Hi Brad,

You'll need to write a script to do this. You can use wget or curl to download the web page and then use grep to search for the information you're looking for. You might have to get a little creative with your grep to get the specific piece of information you need. Then capture the return code of grep to determine if the search was successful. Send the status information to BB based on grep's return code.

You might want to download a few of the scripts on deadcat so you have examples to go by. I'd send you one, but the few I've written are more complicated than what you need and may confuse you more than help you.

If you get completely stuck, send me an email and I'll see if I can come up with a simple example. I'm assuming your BB server is running on some type of Unix.

Subject: {bb} Parsing information from a webpage

Hi All,

My name is Brad and I was just recently hired on as a system administrator (my first job as a system admin) and the person who was doing our monitoring unexpectedly quit. This means that I have taken over administrating our Big Brother monitoring software for our production facility. For the most part I have it down pretty well. However today I was tasked with monitoring something I am not sure how. Basically we have a pool of servers that each has its own servlet page which is dynamically updated. What I need it to do is page if the number generated by the servlet is 0. Anything greater than 0 is fine. I was wondering if there was a clean way of doing this in Big Brother. I know how to have Big Brother check to see if a servlet page is alive or not (we currently have that set up for each server), however parsing information on a page is alittle of my grasp. Hopefully someone will have some ideas. I appreciate any help you can provide, and I look forward to participating in this group.

Thank you,

Brad

System Administrator
