RE: {bb} CHKMSGLEN and bbdef.sh

This is not that big of a deal. On our RedHat hosts I have had to
modify /etc/logrotate.d/syslog anyway to allow the bbclient user read
access to /var/log/messages anyway.

I assume you are on Solaris since you reference /var/adm/messages.
Since Solaris syslog does not put regular timestamps in the log anyway,
we have a cronjob on some hosts like this, which has the side effect of
solving your issue.

0 * * * * logger -p user.info "hourly timestamp"

I also note that if you have your BB server checking ssh to a Solaris
host, you get these every 5m in syslog -

Sep 4 03:29:23 myhost sshd[21259]: [ID 800047 auth.info] Did not
receive identification string from 10.0.0.1

(at least you do with OpenSSH)

It would work. Howevever, I have 200 boxes monitored by bb and putting a
line into
every single /var/adm/messages is a pain...

How about just putting down one line of info in the file, it worked for
me
the other day.

I put CHKMSGLEN="FALSE", export CHKMSGLEN in bbdef.sh and still getting
annoying messages about /var/adm/messages being of zero lenthg. Any
ideas?

Thanks

George
