This should be easy then...at least I hope so...

Start out with the ext-proto script, modify it 
so it does a 'ps -ef|grep <name-of-process>' 
and then use sed/awk to verify it is running.

I know it's very general, but it should get you 
started in the right direction.  Check deadcat 
to see if there are any ext scripts for unix 
that might be of more help if necessary.
