The timing of your original post showed "red" every 20 minutes,
which would correspond to 1 in 4 for a default (5 minute) testing
cycle.

When the failures are metronomic, like this, it suggests to me
that some (il)logic is at work. When you said that the BBNET
machine and the mail server were "only 1 hop apart", did you
mean that they were both on the same (sub)network? In other
words, is there anything (other than cat5 cable; hubs and
switches) between them?
Other information that might provide a clue are the types and
version of the operating systems at each end and the type and
version of the mail server software. It might also be helpful
to see the entries from the mail log which correspond to the
BB tests.
