I think that you may have problems using recent versions of rrdtool.
I don't think it prevents the creation of the graphs, but they
might end up with no data. There is a thread here with some changes
you can try:

or downgrading to version 1.0.50 of rrdtool is also reported to work.

In relation to your more immediate problem, has the "trends"
column been created on the main BB page? Are the RRD files now
being created and updated?
