philip,
thanks for getting back to me...
You're welcome.
I have installed again from a source unpack and followed the README.INSTALL to the letter and still I have the same end result.
Sorry, I appear to have sent my last email without finishing it. There are files in the gif directory...

Nothing obviously wrong there (to me anyway).

I'd guess that some of your utility commands require a different syntax to get them working. I'm not familiar with "SlamdD" as a distribution, but I'd expect it to be similar to Slackware.
In order to test what BB is trying to do, I'd try the following:
grep HEAD /backup/bb1.9h-btf/etc/bbsys.sh
to find what BB is using for that command. Then:
set `/usr/bin/head -1 /backup/bbvar/logs/slime,qub,ac,uk.conn`
echo $1
replacing "/usr/bin/head" with whatever command you got from the first step. If the "head" command gives you an error, you may need to get a different version. If the "echo" gives you something other than a colour, please post the contents of the file "/backup/bbvar/logs/slime,qub,ac,uk.conn".
Cheers, Phil.
