It sounds like there is a problem in the config file.
Did you run the install script ($BBHOME/install/bbconfig) ?
You can also check the bbdef files in $BBHOME/etc
(the pid file is in the $BBTMP/BBPID, check the BBTMP value in bbdef.sh).
