I don't know if it would help because I just started using it this week
on "Hobbit" and don't have all my devices on it yet, but fping is
supposedly better than ping in this type of situation.

Wow, what an amazing response to my question ... this list is so 
helpful.  Thanks.

It looked like MANY (but not ALL) devices went "purple" for the ping 
test.  Perhaps 50 or 60 different hosts.

So what you're suggesting is that ping responses were slowed way down by

a very large number of unreachable hosts, resulting in the purple 
network tests, is that correct?  So it's like Big Brother was trying to 
ping a bunch of hosts that it could not ping because of network issues, 
so the network tests queued up to a backlog of more than 30 minutes, and

things went purple.  Is that a correct/plausible understanding?
