RE: {bb} client and server on the same box

That makes a lot of sense and I will add this to my *nugget* mail.

It is not a primary server, I have to use a server to ping some hosts
that the *server* is not able to reach due to firewalls. So this server
I am working on will check connectivity over a handful of VONs, and then
relay it back to the primary bb server to for display.

This server is only setup as BBNET.

Upon startup I now have:
Starting Big Brother
        Starting Network tests (bb-network)...
        Starting external scripts
                Starting external script bb-memory.sh
                Starting external script bb-iostat-3_10.sh
Big Brother 1.9i started

I believe it was the BBNET portion that fixed it.

Thank you everyone for your assistance.

I hope so but, just for completeness, I add some details.

The trace that you supplied suggests that the machine in
question does not have a server directive (BBDISPLAY, BBNET
or BBPAGER) listed for that machine in the bb-hosts file for
the server software. Essentially, the BB server start-up
scripts process the line for the local machine from the
bb-hosts file, does not see a server directive and stops.

In this case, the resulting message "Big Brother 1.9i started"
is a little misleading. If, however, one of the server parts
does start, it should also report it like so:

  Starting Big Brother Daemon (bbd)...
  Starting Network tests (bb-network)...
  Starting Display process (bb-display)...

Cheers, Phil.
