With a command line telnet client (as found on Unix and Linux),
what you should see is that the connection succeeds (the client
echos a line to inform you of that and one to specify the
escape character) but there will not be a response from the
server. Then, after a few seconds, the server will close the
connection.

If the connection closes immediately, or waits indefinitely to
connect, this is normally a sign that a firewall is getting in
the way. I'm not sure that the telnet application on XP will
provide enough feedback to allow an effective test.

Another thing that you should do is check the BBVAR/logs
directory to see if the client is reporting using the name that
you expected. You can use the FQDN and Alias settings on the
client to adjust this as required and remember that case is
important (CLIENT1 != client1).
