It looks like "grep" is seeing /var/log/messages as a binary file.
I'd start by rotating it to see if something is still writing
binary data into it, otherwise it might just be a feature of the
disk filling up. If the file was manually truncated while there
was still and open filehandle, it can create a "hole" (block of
NULL bytes).
If it persists, I'd try loading the file in "vi" to see if you can
spot where the problem data is coming from. Another thing that is
probably worth trying is to stop the client and manually clear out
any temporary files from BBTMP before restarting.
