Re: {bb} Statrrd error message

Hi,

for us it doesn't happen with BB but with hobbit (we are moving from bb to hobbit but still have both programs running parallely for comparison reasons). In BB we don't use larrd. Nevertheless larrd is the same for bb and hobbit so the problem should be comparable. There is no regular intervall, it happens occasionally but quite frequently (yesterday 20 times for about 10 hosts running two client instances). The interesting fact would be: How determines larrd that those messages are identical although they aren't - at least in our case. They are sent from the same physical machine but by different virtual hosts with different IP and a different point of starting time of the client. If there is no error and the message is written, it is associated to the right virtual host. I don't think that protecting the database from updates to frequently made is an issue as hobbit has polling intervalls by default of 1 minute and there are guys who monitor large networks with hundreds of machines with it. There were no reports of that kind of problems with larrd yet on the hobbit list. So the issue is that those message are coming from the same machine. And I assume that larrd is using other criteria than IP or name to determine if it should store these data or refuse it.

Don't know statrrd.sh but the root issue would be that rrdtool protects
against updating statistics databases too frequently.

Does it happen every time you start up BB, or does it happen once per
update cycle?

Have you tried stopping BB, and then double and triple-checking with PS
to ensure all associated processes have been terminated before
restarting? Either you have two processes trying to store the same data
at nearly the same time, or your system thinks that two different pieces
of data belong in the same file, or -- this happened to me a couple
times when troubleshooting custom larrd scripts -- you restarted too
quickly and it is trying to update a database it had just updated.

Hi,

we have the same phenomena while running more then one instance of a client on one machine using different names for $MACHINE and different IP. Starting the second (and third) client with delay helps for some time, then the problem occurs again. After a while (~ 1h) it seems that the two processes differ again and the problem doesn't occur until next time. In our case it is not BigBrother (there we don't use rrd) but hobbit but that shouldn't matter.
Unfortunately I haven't found a solution for that and I didn't dive into

larrd source code as my C isn't that good.

kind regards
Rolf

Hi,

We have been running Big Brother for years including statrrd but
recently I have been getting the following error messages in BBOUT

every

time it runs.

ERROR: illegal attempt to update using time 1140691546 when last update
time is 1140691546 (minimum one second step)
/export/home/bb/bb/ext/statrrd/statrrd.sh: line 51: [: =: unary

operator

expected

I get about 5 of these messages and I can't understand why this has
suddenly started happening as I havn't changed the statrrd.sh script at
all, The graphing is working fine as far as I can see. Any help or
suggestions would be greatly appreciated as its been driving me nuts

for

a couple of days now.

Thanks
