Re: {bb} SSH checks not written to $BBVAR/logs

The log files on those two servers might contain something useful.
It might also be helpful to run the "bbnet" binary manually, in
order to get more detail about what is going on. Something like:
./bbnet "libmgt1.acsu.buffalo.edu:22" "Big-Brother-Monitor-1.9i"
should do the trick.
Tried it previously, except using:
/bbnet "libmgt1.acsu.buffalo.edu:22" "SSH-1.99-OpenSSH_3.4p1"
because that is how we have it configured here. It always returns fine
(with a lot of crap characters, but the same as all the other machines
which are working fine). Also see my previous message for how this
shifts to the http and ssh checks for the next two hosts in bb-hosts
when I remove ssh checking from these two.
It's also worthwhile pointing out that BB does not try to establish
a real session when it performs the test. It does this in order to
keep the test fast and avoid wasting resources. It's possible that
the ssh server might interpret these repeated failed connections as
a threat and block further communication.
But that would produce a failure and a red light, wouldn't it?
1. Modify BB to send an "acceptable" protocol ID string.
Our string is noted above and it works consistantly on a couple hundred
other machines. Also, since the problem occurs with http as well, it
doesn't seem to be linked to ssh specifically.
2. Configure the server so that it does not reject bogus
connections from the BBNET servers.
Doesn't appear to be the problem. Did some tests and it appears to be
responding fine, even on multiple tests.
3. Replace the default BB test with an external script that
uses a real client. This should give you a good starting
point:
http://www.deadcat.net/viewfile.php?fileid=44
That's pretty cool. I'll have to play around with that.
