No, the ping/network tests are done by the bb-server installation. You 
need to add the keyword BBNET keyword to the line of your server
eg.:

192.168.0.1     mybbserver.mydomain     # BBDISPLAY BBPAGER BBNET

This will tell big brother (the server instance) to run the bb-network.sh 
test.
