I get the feeling that, for very general tools like this, most
extension scripts would normally be too site-specific to be
directly useful to others. The bb-backup.sh script on Deadcat
might be a good starting point though. It expects a log file,
but you may get enough by using the verbose option with fbackup
and redirecting the output.

Looking through the man page, I noticed that you can configure
a script to run when an error occurs. You could set that to
report directly to BB (with a long initial page delay if the
backups run in the middle of the night). Personally, I would
still use the "flag file" method just in case the backup fails
to start correctly.
