However, this fix doesn't seem to work for ssh. All of our logs have something
like:
Apr 10 01:19:02 hostname sshd[10680]: Did not receive identification string from
192.168.202.12
They're not really an issue beyond filling up those logs though.

Just use telnet:s in your bb-hosts file to tell big brother not to do a
protocol handshake. It will only test the ability to connect to the socket
(port 25)
and no handshake. This usually stops the protocol errors. This also works for
things like jakarta (tomcat) listener checks, if all you need is to test
for listening socket.
