Yes, I have and nothing else deletes it until I start bb and then after
serveral minutes, the file gets deleted. Very weird. I might have to
finally upgrade to the latest version.

Not that I can remember.

Recent versions append the contents of an existing BBOUT to BBOUT.OLD at
startup and then create a new one. IIRC 1.8d4 simply appended to BBOUT,
so trimming or rotating it was left as an exercise for the reader :)
Have you tried creating a BBOUT file (as the BB user) without having BB
running to see if there is something else is deleting it?
