It would be helpful to know which version of BB this is. Also,
the OS and version could be pertinent.

As a start, I would try manually testing ping using the hostname,
IP, "localhost" and 127.0.0.1. Do some fail and others succeed?
Do the failures return promptly, or do they hang indefinitely?
